Canadian Telecom Startup Teams with FIDO2 and Biometric Authentication Specialist LoginID

July 15, 2020

Toronto-based telecom startup Data On Tap Inc. has announced that it has formed a partnership with Silicon Valley authentication company LoginID that will allow it to introduce FIDO2 and UAF certified biometric authentication for its dotmobile customers.

dotmobile, which is described by Data On Tap as “a smart tiny telecom designed to be affordable and awesome”, is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) that is still in its early stages, having just released the first Alpha version of its app for Android and iOS last month.

“Simple and secure architecture that respects privacy is at the core of our application design,” said Algis Asktinas, dotmobile and Data On Tap CEO. Our partnership with LoginID will allow our members to add extra protection to their personal information, or strong authentication requirements for certain areas of the application.”

Though no details on the integration of LoginIDs FIDO-as-a-service platform have been revealed as of yet, it will presumably give dotmobile customers the ability to use the biometric sensors — fingerprint scanners and facial recognition for example — found on their devices to authenticate their account, rather than having to rely on traditional PIN and password login methods.

“We are working to bring this extra level of control and security to the current application all the way through to future versions that will support wireless service,” said Akstinas.

“We are excited about partnering with dotmobile,” said LoginID CEO, Simon Law. “LoginID’s FIDO2 certified solution securely invokes existing biometrics saved on the user’s device and can be flexibly added to the application to verify the intended user during login, when accessing personal information, or before taking irreversible actions.”

FIDO2 is the overarching term for the newest set of specifications set by the FIDO Alliance, an open industry association focused on authentication standards.

“With the LoginID FIDO2 service we will be able to increase digital in-app and web interactions security and where required provide additional authentication and user level control,” Alginas said. “This will also alleviate any customer concerns around SIM swap attacks, which is becoming more of a prevalent issue for customers.”
