Samsung’s forthcoming Galaxy A8 smartphone is going to have a lot of screen space and a fingerprint scanner. That’s the analysis resulting from leaked images, which reveal a device with almost no bezels and an advanced home button.
The Galaxy A8 is also very sleek in design, coming in at 142 grams and 5.94 millimeters thin. It has a 1920 x 1080 px display, 16GB memory that can be expanded by 128 GB via a microSD card, a 5MP camera and a 16MP rear-facing camera. It will run on a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor, and an Android 5.1 Lollipop OS.
Interestingly, the device is expected to be priced around $450 – $500, so its inclusion of a fingerprint scanner is significant, signalling the increasing preponderance of this kind of biometric technology across a broadening range of the mobile spectrum. It also may reflect the growing importance of this technology with respect to user authentication on mPayment systems, of which Samsung is currently readying its own platform for launch this year.
There is currently no official release date for the Galaxy A8. Given that Samsung’s flagship Galaxy Note 5 device is expected in September, we might see the Galaxy A8 hit the market sooner to avoid any competition, but at this point the possibilities are wide open for speculation.
