“The announcement comes at a time of growing anticipation over the emergence of biometric payment cards…”
Gemalto and Entrust Datacard have announced a new partnership to offer an instant card issuance solution for banks. The partnership combines Gemalto’s Software as a Service platform with Entrust Datacard’s instant issuance system, allowing financial services clients to print personalized EMV cards on demand.
In a statement announcing the partnership, the organizations cited an Aite Group market forecast predicting that from 2017 to 2021, the number of North American financial institutions to implement instant issuance will rise from 3,312 to 5,483. The companies also asserted that instant issuance can boost card activation rates by 82 percent. And they asserted that their solution reduces costs enough that “financial institutions of any size can profit from the many benefits of a SaaS-based instant issuance solution.”
The announcement comes at a time of growing anticipation over the emergence of biometric payment cards, a technology they Gemalto and Entrust Datacard did not mention in their announcement. But given that Gemalto is itself involved in biometric payment card trials, there is good reason for the company to seek to incorporate a production capability for such cards into its instant issuance solution with Entrust Datacard.
