IDEX Biometrics is moving forward with the mass production of its TrustedBio fingerprint sensor. The production of the 40 nm TrustedBio ASIC is being handled by TSMC, which currently operates as the world’s largest silicon foundry. The final assembly of the complete TrustedBio module, on the other hand, is being outsourced to a separate semiconductor packaging service. That service will also be responsible for testing IDEX’s TrustedBio products.
Now that it has moved on to the production phase, IDEX will begin filling volume orders that have already been received. That includes a new order from an unnamed tier 1 European card manufacturer, as well as previous orders from Zwipe, which has integrated the sensor into its own Pay ONE platform and is acting as an IDEX channel partner. Zwipe placed an initial order for 300,000 TrustedBio sensors in October.
The TrustedBio sensors will be featured in biometric payment cards. Manufacturers will start shipping those cards to banks and other issuers later in 2021.
“With volume orders being received, including a new order from a leading tier 1 card manufacturer, we knew it was important to ensure our supply chain was fit for purpose,” said IDEX CEO Vince Graziani. “It is satisfying to see that all of the team’s hard work in establishing an appropriate mass production ready supply chain is paying off.”
IDEX unveiled the TrustedBio sensor in February of 2020, and sent out its first shipment in August. The company has argued that the sensor will accelerate commercialization because it dramatically reduces the manufacturing costs associated with biometric cards.
