Mobile Fingerprint Sensor Maker Marks 1.5 Billion Shipments

July 21, 2022

Fingerprint Cards (FPC) is celebrating another major business milestone. The company has now shipped more than 1.5 billion fingerprint sensors since 2014, adding another 500 million sensors to its tally three years after crossing the 1 billion sensor threshold back in 2019.

Mobile Fingerprint Sensor Maker Marks 1.5 Billion Shipments

Those sensors have appeared in a wide range of products, including Android phones, payment cards, and (increasingly) PCs. The company was the first to deploy a fingerprint touch sensor in an Android device in 2014, and its tech has since gone on to appear in more than 600 different smartphone models.

The payment and PC markets, meanwhile, have been expanding in recent years. FPC sensors have now been featured in upwards of 40 laptop models, and four of the world’s top six PC manufacturers have signed on as FPC clients. Earlier this year, Microsoft also placed FPC’s biometric solution for PCs on its approved vendor list of Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security products.

On the payments front, eight financial institutions have now launched biometric payment cards with FPC tech. That roster includes the banks BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole, and BBVA Mexico, all three of which are taking advantage of FPC’s T-Shape sensor module. FPC sensors have proven to be similarly popular in the access control space, where several door lock manufacturers have adopted FPC biometrics.

“We have done a huge amount of work to ready ourselves for broader adoption of biometrics and the market is now increasingly recognizing the value biometrics can offer to consumers and businesses,” said FPC CEO Christian Fredrikson. “With every new market and use case, our total addressable market grows. There’s still work to be done, but biometrics have a big role to play in the future of our digital society.”

FPC split into two subsidiaries at the tail end of 2021 to build on those efforts to diversify its portfolio. The Shanghai subsidiary focuses primarily on the mobile industry, while the Switzerland branch concentrates more on payments and access control.
