Apple has received approval for a US patent for a fingerprint sensor system embedded on a laptop or PC. Originally filed back in 2007, the patent essentially paves the way for Apple’s Touch ID system to come to its Mac PCs and Macbook laptops.
Touch ID is, of course, the user authentication system now standard on all new Apple mobile devices. The system has been used to help popularize Apple’s mPayment platform, Apple Pay, by ensuring that transactions can be securely authorized; and it has been embraced for authentication purposes by other apps too. Now, all major high-end smartphone makers are integrating fingerprint sensors into their devices.
It doesn’t stop there, though. As mobile and digital transactions continue to rise in popularity, some companies are seeking to include biometric authentication systems on other kinds of hardware. This is the case with a few different laptops and PCs planned to help launch Microsoft Windows 10, which aims to heavily promote biometric user authentication. With that in mind, this latest patent may prove highly valuable in Apple’s arsenal going forward.
