UK-based TSB Bank is set to become the first bank in Europe to embrace mobile iris scanning for mobile app login.
The login feature for the bank’s mobile app starting this September, allowing users of Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones to access their accounts via iris scan. In announcing the new login feature, the bank emphasized its security, asserting that iris scanning uses more data points for its biometric profiles than fingerprint recognition.
It’s another sign that Samsung could succeed in pioneering iris-based authentication in much the same way that Apple helped to establish fingerprint scanning as a standard mobile login feature with its Touch ID system. Earlier this year, Mastercard also announced S8 iris scanning support on its Identity Check authentication platform.
The move also bodes well for Samsung’s aspirations to make iris scanning the central authentication mechanism within its payments ecosystem, especially if it catches on among bank customers and additional banks embrace the functionality.
