A UK government agency mandated with establishing and enforcing standards for electronic security has approved Samsung’s latest flagship devices for use by government officials. With their new certification from the Communications and Electronics Security Group‘s (CESG) Commercial Product Assurance program, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are now approved and indeed recommended for use by employees in areas such as the police, hospitals, municipal councils, and various government departments.
The certification mostly revolves around Samsung’s KNOX platform, which is intended for enterprise applications. Both mobile devices include KNOX 2.4 as a built-in feature, allowing the employees of organizations using it to attain secure access to sensitive work data via their mobile devices. The rigorous CPA testing on a data-at-rest basis validates the sophistication of the Samsung devices’ KNOX platform, and follows similar certifications from government agencies in Russia, Finland, and the US.
With the CESG certification, the benefits to both the UK government and Samsung are obvious. The government gets to enjoy greater efficiency by giving employees expanded and secure remote access work files, email, and so on; while Samsung now has even greater credibility for its devices and its KNOX platform. Speaking in a press release, Samsung UK & Ireland executive Graham Long said, “CESG’s acknowledgment of Samsung KNOX is testament to the high standard of security offered by the Samsung Android platform and once again reinforces our leading position in area, helping to provide secure mobile technology to government organisations and businesses throughout the UK.”
