July is Biometric Software Month at Mobile ID World and to start things out strong we published a primer on the topic. In terms of industry news the topic of the month was hot this week too. StickyPassword announced browser extensions, smartphone voice biometrics was highlighted in a new market research report, and FacialNetwork announced its 3D facial recognition app: ZoOm.

The mCommerce wars are poised to reach a new level this week as PayPal officially strikes out on its own. Last week saw news anticipating the big day for PayPal, with the company’s stock receiving a major boost. ApplePay is set to be the major rival of the payments veteran, and it will be launching in the UK this Tuesday. A number of new reports set the stage for this next episode of the battle for your wallet, and Amex launched its own online checkout system, while ImageWare Systems announced its tech will be authenticating users at OnlineAuction.com.

Synaptics announced a major innovation in fingerprint sensor technology last week with its Match-in-Sensor solution. Researchers at University of California, Davis, meanwhile, announced that they are developing a low cost ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. IDEX and Nok Nok Labs partnered to integrate the former’s sensors with the latter’s S3 Authentication suite, and BioCatch announced that it has been approved for two new behavioral biometrics patents.

In terms of mobile device news this week we had speculation on the upcoming Galaxy A8 and Sony’s next line of flagship devices. Meanwhile Samsung predicted a Q2 profit drop thanks in part to underwhelming Galaxy S6 sales. Finally, Credence ID, a company that specializes in multimodal biometric handheld devices, was awarded by Frost & Sullivan for its dynamic and adaptable nature.
