Last week the Internet was abuzz with the latest rumor surrounding Apple: that it will becoming its own mobile carrier. The Cupertino company’s Apple Pay mobile wallet also made headlines with the newest in a series of mixed reports on its adoption rate among iPhone users. Regardless of whether the positive or negative adoption reports are more accurate, diners at Pei Wei restaurants will now be able to use Apple Pay to settle their bills.

Last week’s news contained a diverse collection of topics, all sharing the common thread of depending on the current paradigm of high connectivity. General Electric furthered its commitment to the Internet of Things while we reported on new eye-tracking tech aimed at augmented reality wearable glasses. The ongoing class action lawsuit against Facebook for its use of facial recognition moved to California last week, a new white paper from Calgary Scientific highlighted the new mobile innovations in healthcare, and Sensory released TrulyHandsfree 4.0, which serves to greatly benefit connected devices of all kinds thanks to its low power consumption and deep learning features.

Last week we reported on news from the Black Hat Conference pertaining to vulnerabilities in certain smartphone fingerprint sensors and Samsung announced that it will be endeavoring to offer monthly security updates to its handsets. Synaptics announced that it is collaborating with Microsoft on a touch pad fingerprirnt sensor, while the latter of the companies also filed a patent for an advanced mobile biometrics system. Nok Nok Labs’ Philip Dunkelberger, meanwhile, joined the myPINpad board of directors last week.

Last week signaled the start of August, placing us a month away from another Apple event, the Global Identity Summit, and autumn – a season ripe with major mobile ID news.
