Goodix has placed its optical In-Display Fingerprint Sensor in another 5G-enabled smartphone. This time, the component manufacturer has officially announced that the sensor will appear in Vivo’s X30 5G series.
The news comes shortly after Goodix revealed that its optical fingerprint sensor would appear in the McLaren Edition of the OnePlus 7T Pro 5G, which is one of only two smartphones that is currently compatible with T-Mobile’s nationwide 5G network. The X30 5G series is not on that list, but it does indicate that Goodix is starting to turn its attention to 5G devices.
In the meantime, Goodix’s sensor has turned up in recent mobile offerings from OPPO, Honor, and Xiaomi. OPPO deployed it in the Reno Ace and the OPPO K5, while Honor used it in the Honor 20 Lite Youth Edition and Xiaomi integrated it into the Mi CC9 Pro. The sensor has an ultra-thin form factor that makes it highly appealing to many device manufacturers.
This is also not the first time that Goodix has provided the in-display reader for a Vivo phone. The biometric sensor was featured in the Nex S and the X21.
The latest placement is in keeping with the broader trend towards in-display fingerprint recognition. Several rumors have suggested that Apple plans to use in-display tech to reintroduce Touch ID for the iPhone, and Samsung has leveraged it for its flagship Galaxy S10.
