This week in mobile identity news we started off with a survey that shed light on how small businesses look at cyber security, saw some big additions to strong authentication platforms and found ourselves surprised by a change in leadership at PayPal.
Starting off with the surprising, on Monday, eBay announced that the president of PayPal, David Marcus, will be stepping down. Marcus will be leaving the company on June 27 in order to join the Facebook team, leading the social network’s messaging products. While a replacement is sought, the leadership at PayPal will answer to John Donahoe, president and CEO of eBay.
Taking a look at the aforementioned upgrades, it looks like the effects of Touch ID’s recent opening to third parties is already having an effect. IdentityX announced on Friday that its Infinity Platform has received a major system update that allows Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint sensor to be used as a security factor. With iPhone fingerprint support, Infinity Platform continues to achieve its namesake: getting closer to universal support, thanks in part to its continued support of Windows device fingerprint sensors.
The Avaya DevConnect MarketPlace also bolstered its strong authentication offerings, this week announcing the certification of SpeechPro’s VoiceKey. Now that it’s available through the MarketPlace, VoiceKey will have an expanded reach. Customers looking for biometrics that can bolster their call center, interactive voice response (IVR) or mobile applications can find SpeechPro’s solution through Avaya’s web-portal.
This week also saw the introduction of a new mobile ID platform, with Gemalto launching LinqUs: a platform designed to attack password fatigue. The new solution can work on any handset thanks to software embedded on the SIM card and is also available through the increasingly popular software-as-a-service (SaaS) model, making it more accessible for mobile network operators and their clients.
All of this ID platform news is great for small businesses, especially considering a recent survey conducted by CSID. The security firm polled companies with fewer than 100 employees about security concerns and policies. What it found was an unfortunate relationship between concern and action.
Finally, this was the second week of Multi-Modal Month at our sister site findBIOMETRICS. On Wednesday, fB took a look at the power of multiple factors and the big ideas inherent in combining authentication methods. Mobility plays a big role in this discussion, so be sure to check out that article.
