“While the S2 will only support payments at NFC-enabled POS terminals, the S3 is equipped with both NFC and the MST technology that makes Samsung Pay compatible with older swipe-based payment terminals.”
With Samsung’s biometrically secured wallet now available in the UK, Samsung is working to expand its adoption by making Samsung Pay compatible with its newest smartwatches.
Software updates have delivered the functionality to both the Gear S3 and the Gear S2. While the S2 will only support payments at NFC-enabled POS terminals, the S3 is equipped with both NFC and the MST technology that makes Samsung Pay compatible with older swipe-based payment terminals.
The new support isn’t going to dramatically boost user adoption of Samsung Pay, since there are relatively few Samsung smartwatch users compared to the number of consumers using compatible smartphones. But every little bit helps as Samsung tries to close the gap between its mPayment platform and its rival Apple Pay, which is thought to be leading the nascent market.
Samsung Pay launched in the UK just a couple of weeks ago, and is supported by Amex, HSBC, MBNA, Nationwide, and Santander banks.
