Samsung has revealed its new Galaxy Note 5 mobile device, and its hardware is very similar to the Samsung Galaxy S6. Of course, it remains distinct in its focus on its stylus functionality.
Like the its iteration, the Samsung Note 4, the Note 5 features an S Pen stylus for writing and drawing directly on its 5.7″ screen, and the stylus is stored in its own small compartment at the bottom right of the device. Otherwise, though, the Note 5 is very similar to the Samsung Galaxy S6, with metal frame, glass front and rear, Samsung Exynos chip, 16MP camera, and quad HD resolution. It also features a built-in fingerprint sensor, and runs on the Android 5.1 Lollipop OS.
Announced alongside the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+, the device is notable for its recycling of previously-used design and functionality. Other than having a bigger screen, the Edge+ is essentially the same as its predecessor, while the Note 5 borrows heavily from the Samsung Galaxy S6. Given that the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge were widely considered successes upon their launch earlier this year, this may just be a reflection of an if-it-ain’t-broke mentality. And while its newest smartphones may not be the most innovative devices in its lineup, Samsung has also offered a sneak preview of its new Apple Watch rival, which certainly does offer up some novel Samsung hardware.
Also notable is the August 21st release date of the smartphones. Previously, Samsung had flatly denied the speculation that it would release its new flagship devices in summer rather than try to compete directly against Apple’s new mobile devices in September. The company has since clearly opted for a more prudent course of action.
