Last week at Mobile ID World we were reporting from Mobile World Congress Shanghai, the largest mobility event in Asia. MWC had us talking 5G, IoT, and biometric identity management while headlines from the world of fingerprint smartphones and financial applications rounded out the news.
Here is a look back on the biggest headlines from last week in mobile digital identity:
Identity at MWC
Mobile ID World president Peter O’Neill took the stage in Shanghai last week to moderate two sessions at Mobile World Congress. Dealing with topics of cyber security, network infrastructure, identity, and personalisation, the sessions brought together leading minds in 5G, biometrics, IoT, and more to discuss the big challenges and opportunities facing the world of mobility. Take a look below to unpack the conversation with us:

IoT at MWC
If we’re talking about the future of mobility then we’re talking about Internet of Things. That means IoT was prominent in the Mobile World Congress news. Oberthur, Ericsson, and Huawei each had Internet of Things related announcements and demonstrations in Shanghai last week. Take a look:

Reports out of MWC
The GSMA took the opportunity of Mobile World Congress Shanghai to release new research. The organization behind MWC announced the results from two major reports last week, one detailing the growth of industrial IoT in China and another providing insight into consumer attitudes toward digital communications.

Fingerprints
Outside of Mobile World Congress we saw a slew of fingerprint biometrics news. Synaptics and Fingerprint Cards each announced a new smartphone integration of their respective technologies, Shinhan Bank enabled FIDO-based fingerprint authentication on its mobile app, and the Cerberus app was updated to support Android fingerprint biometrics. Meanwhile, rumors surfaced that Samsung is rethinking its Galaxy fingerprint scanner design to look a bit more like Touch ID.

Finance
In mobile FinTech last week we saw new support for Apple Pay coming from some major parking apps. A new study showed that China is the world’s largest mobile payment market, and a group of Chinese Banks began offering biometric fitness trackers to customers, strictly for health reasons rather than identification purposes.

Mobile Authentication
Rounding out the news we saw rumors surface once again around the potential of Samsung including iris authentication on an upcoming smartphone. This time the rumors are much more believable, seeing as NTT Docomo has already pioneered the iris scanning consumer handset—one of the many achievements that is setting it apart from its MNO peers. Finally, we also reported last week on a selfie-based two-factor authentication app that, rather than leveraging facial recognition, depends on image sharing and user confirmation.
