Samsung is going to launch its new flagship smartphones as well as a VR camera just before this year’s Mobile World Congress, according to new reports.
This past weekend, the company released images of its Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge smartphones. While details about the S7’s internal specifications remain scant, previous reports have suggested that it could feature a pressure sensitive touchscreen similar to Apple’s 3D Touch system, as well as a retina scanner, which could ultimately be integrated into the user authentication process used by Samsung Pay. In appearance, the new models look a lot like the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge devices.
Samsung also issued a teaser video placing a strong emphasis on a VR headset and with the tagline “Get ready to rethink what a phone can do”, and SamMobile has subsequently confirmed that the hints point to the Gear 360, a VR camera capable of capturing 360-degree images via a pair of fisheye lenses. The device apparently will have Galaxy S7 compatibility, though it isn’t yet clear what functionality that will allow.
All of these devices should be launched a special Samsung event hosted at the Centre de Convencions Internacional de Barcelona on February 21st, the day before the start of this year’s Mobile World Congress.
