This week at Mobile ID World we saw a rumor surface concerning iPhone 6 production, Touch ID trademark denial, voice biometrics news and an expert’s take on the tipping point for mCommerce.
Starting off with the Apple news, a new rumor concerning the iPhone 6 might see one of the expected smartphone models delayed for launch. According to industry insider Ming-Chi Kuo, a touch technology related production snag on the newest set of iPhones could see the larger of the two models ( 5.5 inch) pushed to a 2015 release date.
While that news can be added to the mountain of rumors surrounding Apple’s next generation of smartphones, this next bit of iPhone related info is confirmed. Appleinsider reported this week that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has denied the company’s application for a trademark on Touch ID because it shares its name with an earlier trademark registered by Kronos, a time and attendance solutions provider.
A new partnership between Fonetic and Tango Networks will be bringing voice biometrics to the trading floor. Fonetic’s speech analytics solution will offer trade analysis, full trade reconstruction, anti-fraud alerts and risk management, while the Mobile Recording Application from Tango will cover the secure transactions, critical information sharing and the secure recording of customer relations calls.
On the consumer facing side of mobile ID and finance, BI Intelligence released a presentation on the increasing popularity of mCommerce. Research compiled by Business Insider shows that, during the first quarter of 2014, almost 25% of all eCommerce site visits in the United States were made from smartphones. This is an 18 percent increase on the whole year of 2013. Add in the 12 percent of eCommerce site visits made up by tablet users (up from last year’s 9 percent share) and what you have is a strong indication of how users want to shop online.
This week also continued to bring news of speech and voice recognition solutions reaching new languages. Consumer speech and vision technology provider Sensory Inc. announced support for languages used in 41 countries across the globe including English, Mandarin, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Russian, Arabic, Turkish, Swedish and Portuguese.
On card biometrics made it into the industry news this week too, with IDEX receiving an initial fingerprint sensor order from Card Tech. The cards – described as ISO-compliant system-on-card solutions – will be produced by Card Tech’s tier-one production partner. According to IDEX’s announcement, biometric cards form one of three strategic mass markets of interest for the company.
Finally, over at our sister site, findBIOMETRICS, the Road to Biometrics UnPlugged continued with a look at three biometric deployments in the financial market.
