Last week at Mobile ID World we wrapped up our Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai coverage with a focus on connectivity while second factor authentication, fingerprints, and wearables made headlines in the industry news. The future of authentication was a subject too, tanks to an interview with Nok Nok Labs CEO Phillip Dunkelberger.
Here’s a look back on last week’s top stories in mobile digital identity:
Connectivity
We were back from Shanghai last week, reflecting on the most recent Mobile World Congress event held by the GSMA. While our sister site FindBiometrics examined three major trends of the conference, we reported on MWC Shanghai’s record attendance. The event was largely dominated by 5G innovations, and next gen connectivity continued to be in the post-conference headlines with an update on Ericsson and Vodafone’s 5G pilot in Germany.

Fingerprints
In last week’s fingerprint biometrics news we reported on the latest Fingerprint Cards smartphone integration as the company announced the date for its Q2 financial update. Precise Biometrics signed a software licensing agreement with Betterlife, Acer launched a notebook with fingerprint biometrics, and we saw a rumor surface regarding a future version of Apple’s Touch ID that will include pressure sensitivity.

Second Factor
Two-factor and multifactor authentication company Yubico partnered with Versasec, we reported last week. Two-factor is becoming more popular around the world as an accessible authentication option, and Singapore’s government is following trend, with authorities urging citizens to use 2FA security when using e-services.

FinTech
New mobile wallets made their way into the headlines last week, with Walmart rolling out its Walmart Pay solution in New York. We also saw a sneak peek of LG’s forthcoming mobile payment offering, which is reportedly going to manifest as an actual card with embedded OTP security. Apple Pay launched in Switzerland, in the meantime, and Standard Chartered Bank enabled Touch ID on its mobile app in eight African countries. Finally, in Mexico, Banco Inbursa selected FacePhi’s facial recognition solution for its mobile and web platforms.

Mobile Authentication
Last week we published an interview with Phillip Dunkelberger, CEO, Nok Nok Labs. The conversation was recorded near the one year anniversary of the historic OPM breach and deals with the role of strong authentication and encryption in this age of massive database hacks. Meanwhile, Safran Identity & Security’s Philippe Le Pape did some future-gazing in a new blog post detailing what’s in store for multimodal mobile biometrics technology.
